Dementia Friends Session @ Shire Hall

On Thursday afternoon I attended a Dementia Friends Session at Shire Hall....
Shire Hall was awarded 'Best Interior Dementia Design' at the 2017 National Dementia Care Awards and just by entering the reception area you can see a lot of care and consideration has gone into its recent refurbishment with comfortable, modern furnishings and refreshments available to all. It also boasts the most welcoming and happy receptionist !
Our session was led by Gary , Shire Halls Maintenance Technician , who as well as being a Dementia Friends Champion recently took part in The Cardiff Bay Run and  raised £620 for Alzheimer's Research UK.
With the assistance of interactive exercises plus a brilliant explanation of how Dementia works ( I love the bookcase - though it does make me cry...''I'll know I love you')  and group discussions Gary explained the 5 key facts everyone should know about Dementia:

1.It is not a natural part of ageing

2.It is caused by diseases of the brain -The most common being Alzheimer's

3.Its not just about losing your memory:it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks

4.It is possible to live well with Dementia

5.There is more to a person than the Dementia

The overall message being 'With support, people with Dementia can and do take an active role in Life'

I highly recommend attending a Dementia Friends Session it is informative and eye-opening !
Afterwards you can pledge your action and wear your badge with pride !
