White Christmas

Accounts vary as to where and when Irving Berlin told his secretary ''Grab your pen and take down this song I've just written - it's the best song I've wrote.......Heck! I just wrote the best song ANYONE  has written!''
White Christmas, as sung by Bing Crosby,  is the worlds best selling single ,with estimated sales in excess of 100 million copies worldwide - other versions, along with Crosby's ,have sold over 50 million.
The first public performance of the song was by Bing on his NBC radio show Christmas Day 1941
The song won Irving Berlin  the Academy Award for Best Song of The Year in 1942
Although often dropped from recordings the song has an opening verse:

The sun is shining, the grass is green,
The orange and palm trees sway.
There's never been such a day
                                                     in Beverly Hills, L.A.
                                                     But it's December the twenty-fourth,
And I am longing to be up North.....

It has been sung by Darlene Love, Barbra Streisand, The Carpenters ,Neil Diamond Bette Midler, Libera and Crash Test Dummies
White Christmas is the most recorded Christmas song - with more than 500 recorded versions, in several different languages  including : French, Italian , Hungarian, Spanish and Swedish

Irving's Daughter can give us some insight into the process and popularity of this song here

It became the only song to have three separate runs ( 1942/45/46) in the U.S before Billboard Charts created a separate Christmas Chart ( 1942 alone it stayed for 11 weeks in the Billboard charts ,as well as topping the Harlem Hit Parade chart for 3 weeks that same year.
In 1974 'White Christmas' was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame...not bad for a song that ,apparently , took 18 minutes to write........
